Why Do Men Need Coaching?
Society often places a large amount of responsibility on men, but leaves them little room for expression of their thoughts and emotions or how certain situations have impacted them. 60% of men have reported a traumatic event in their lives; however, more than half of these men fail to seek treatment due to societal expectations on how a man should manage his mental health and feelings. Because of society’s perceptions and expectations, a man may choose not to report any traumatic events that have occurred in his life at all.
For the adolescent male, unresolved trauma can manifest in various emotional, behavioral and physiological ways. Emotionally, he might experience intense feelings of fear, anger, sadness, or anxiety that seem disproportionate to current events, often leading to mood swings and a pervasive sense of distrust. Behaviorally, he might engage in risky or self-destructive activities, struggle with school performance, or withdraw from social interactions, becoming isolated from peers and family. Physiologically, unresolved trauma can contribute to sleep disturbances, chronic pain, and heightened stress responses, which can affect overall health and development.
Traumatic events that adolescent boys and men tend to experience include experiences with racisms/discrimination, physical abuse, having a parent in jail, missing family member, and growing up in poverty or unsafe neighborhoods. Less reported traumatic experiences may include experiences with sexual and emotional abuse.
